The Local Handcraft Association Inc. at 2 St Johns Ave. Gordon, on Sydney's
North Shore, specialises solely in Australian made craft. Our shelves
are packed with handmade objects ranging from upside down dolls to Liberty
print tissue boxes and sterling silver candle snuffers.
In all, there are 30 crafts represented. The association is run as a co-operative
of about 60 members. Most of the members are North Shore residents,
they work one day a month in the shop and contribute a percentage of
their takings towards the running of the shop. Because they don't have
the normal retail overheads, like paying staff, goods are very keenly
priced. Prices range from $1 for a hand painted card to $930 for a hand-carved
chess set, but the average gift costs between $20 and $40.

The only shop of its kind on the North Shore, the Local Handcraft Association has
been trading for over 30 years. With the motto of "come in and
meet the makers", the shop prides itself on always having members
available to talk to customers about their work, craft in general or
suggest gift ideas.
The Association is the home of several award - winning craftspeople, professional
teachers.
